Wall of Sound: Old at Heart

Old at Heart

I lost my marbles in a gerbil maze
The money’s lousy, but at least it pays
Eat whatever the white coats feed
Doc, I think that last placebo cured me

(Chorus)
Cause my doors are all locked
And my clock lost its tock
It keeps tick, tick, tick, ticking to itself
And nothing feels like it felt
I can’t feel her anymore
No, nothing feels like it felt
I can’t feel her anymore

A bookworm eats all the lion’s teeth
His claws of prose, his roar beneath
These punctured leaves that you receive
These are all that’s left of me
I killed a false love for a false hate
Broken winged, I’m flying straight
With an undertaker’s bill
And a soul sedating wonder pill

(Repeat chorus)

She’s so young and she’s so free
But I’m so old at heart
Everything I know I need
But I’m so old at heart

(Repeat chorus)

The first draft of this (November 3, 2004) was simply new lyrics to the melody of Eliot Smith's "Fond Farewell." Not a bad song to rip off, but even my inflection was coming off as a Smith impersonation when I sang it. I finished revising the song on August 7, 2005. It still can be song to that melody, but it's no longer bound to it like some sort of parasite.
