The Great Migration: Black Ice

Black Ice

Black ice and a cappuccino fog
Hung over like a raincoat
Freeloaders shaved the dog
Snaking through the back roads
On a cold October night
Jack-o-lantern in the back seat
And one taillight

Black ice wrote a fishtailed love
With shipwrecked tractor trailers
And the high beams in my eyes
Got to find a midnight station
Keep me floating out of nod
They’ll be sawdust in the bed sheets
If I don’t fall down in the sod

I got to get back home
Oh, yeah
I got to get back home
Back home to my girl
She ain’t gonna sleep tonight till I fall in her arms
I got to get back home
Back home…
To my girl

Black ice and Athena’s in my skull
Split me open with a fire axe
Don’t give damn if it’s dull
Keep a sand dollar in your wallet
Pawn the Sahara for a dream
Take the shovel from the trunk
And we’ll tunnel through the cream

Black ice and a carrion vest
Scarecrows hitching nightmares
Caught at a spoon in the road
Leave a penny on the train tracks
Keep the windows rolled up tight
Say a prayer for little boy blue
And slide the pistol out of sight

I got to get back home
Oh, yeah
I got to get back home
Back home to my girl
She ain’t gonna sleep tonight...
Oh, yeah
She ain’t gonna sleep tonight...
Oh, yeah
She ain’t gonna sleep tonight till I fall in her arms
I got to get back home
Back home…
To my girl

Black ice and a cappuccino fog
Hung over like a raincoat
Freeloaders shaved the dog
Snaking through the back roads
On a cold October night
Jack-o-lantern in the back seat
And no… taillights
No taillights…
No taillights…

Oh…

I got to get back home
Oh, yeah
I got to get back home
Back home to my girl
She ain’t gonna sleep tonight till I fall in her arms
I got to get back home
Back home…
To my girl
