Checking In: King of Thieves

King of Thieves

Oh, King of Thieves
I have tried to deepen the footprints that you leave in the falling sands
But your stride would humble mountains
Topple Bable towers
Crumble Bimini fountains
Please forgive me
If at times…
I rode upon your burdened back

Oh, King of Thieves
What happened to you when your youth and fairest princesses dissolved
Into a flashbulb sea of hungry faces?
With ears like scythes
And parasitical embraces
Please forgive me
If I objectify…
You with request for autograph

Oh, King of Thieves
Painting horses in Jerusalem
Though to some they seem a mockery of god
But does not a mother
Smile at her child’s finger paintings?
Or is there mockery in love?

Oh, King of Thieves
With your forty-strong behind you, riding through the midnight song
How I’ve longed to ride among you
And plunder the time
Honey-gilded by love’s labor
Please forgive me
If unworthy…
I still reach out for the gauntlet
