Diamonds
In a paper maché prison
The stars began to dance
Dried out of emotion
My head was in a trance
Outside two men were drinking
And singing a song I knew too well
My mother sang it to me
The day I rose and the day I fell
They sang: (Refrain)
Diamonds are quite pretty
But pretty things are worth nothing
Foolish people fall in love
With those who love to use
So quit chasing after diamonds
You'll get nothing that you lack
You'll throw away the world
And sell the diamond to get it back
I was playing down by the corner
When I got into this mess
Someone once did tell me
Heaven wears pretty blue dress
She walked over so slowly
I felt like was at the bottom of the sea
My friends did try to warn me
Oh how they pleaded to me
They sang: (Refrain)
Every time I woke up
I thought I'd escaped from the dream
But then I'd turn my head to the right
And there she would be smiling
I ran into a brick wall
Set fire to all my clothes
Jumped out of a building
Trying to get away from the diamond that was Rose
(Refrain)
And the moral of this story
I've already said three times
As I sit inside my prison
Selling pennies for wooden dimes
And outside still two men are drinking
Singing a song I know too well
My mother sang it to me
The day I rose and the day I fell
They sing: (Refrain)
